TN's Earth's Biomes
Community Rating
A mod first released on my Discord, this mod modifies the biome map on Earth, giving Earth 5 biomes, dead trees, dried up oceans, and the remains of polar ice caps. Few animals remain in this inhospitable wasteland, but some life clings on as the atmosphere leaks away and radiation bakes the seat of human civilization.
Mars took millions of years to lose its atmosphere when its magnetosphere collapsed. 50 years is not enough time for Earth to become as desolate as the game portrays it. Earth's Biomes takes a more Fallout-esque approach to a dying Earth. Earth is uninhabitable, with thin atmosphere and no magnetosphere, but some life still clings on. Some life has already begun to change, and some alien organisms that hitched rides on ships coming to and from even managed to set up shop.
Small settlements and structures can be found throughout the settled systems, so it is unreasonable to assume no one would still be on Earth. Earth would still hold so much value, even in its ruined state. Natural resources would still be left behind, old technology and relics could still be salvaged, and the life that continues to hang on still has value in medicine, or even agriculture. Earth's Biomes brings back some of this value, habitation, and creates a more appropriate atmosphere to this now dying world.
Explore 5 Biomes:
- The Wasteland (Dotted with dead trees and brush and vast dunes of sand, the wasteland is dry, and empty, but still holds quite a bit of flora and some fauna to discover.)
- The Desolation (Earth was once covered mostly in oceans. The Desolation is what remains of Earth's oceans. You will find large pools of water still here that haven't fully dried up yet, and a small amount of life.)
- The Icecaps (Earth's ice caps, like even those on Mars, hold fast to the water that remains in the form of ice. Some creatures remain here that have begun adapting to the increased solar radiation, but since the ice caps don't receive as much sunlight, this makes for a more sheltered haven of what once was.)
- The Wasted Mountains (With increased elevation, the wasted mountains represent the many mountain ranges that still cover Earth. These higher locations have a slightly different ecosystem left behind, and less room for structural remnants.)
- The Coastal Desolation (Where the oceans met the land, much of Earth had once been covered in a vast ocean ecosystem, including corals and other marine life. Though fewer pockets of water exist in the coastal desolation, more life remains huddled in the remnants of these reefs.)
Includes a small number of fauna, and over a dozen flora that can be scanned and used at outposts. Resources vary (I could not ever figure out how to add more than a handful), but represent what was most commonly found on Earth, and what might remain. Human habitation structures (including from other mods) should show up here, and you can find Spacers, Pirates, and Ecliptic here as well. Earth will spawn POIs you can find from space as well, but these may only show up if you've never visited Earth before in that save (a unity visit may be necessary to visit them).
The mod does not use any new assets or unique locations. It only effects the biomes, and resources. This mod was originally released in the "Stuff of Legends" Discord on 4/22/2025. It was meant to be an exclusive preview of a larger project, but this never got to move forward (at least not yet). So I am releasing it publicly now. The mod did not use any third party tools. The biome maps had to be made using a hex editor and Photoshop. However, much of the information I used to create the mod came from the Starfield Modding discord's "Creating a New Star System and Planets" thread. If you wish to learn more about that process, or use the tools that were developed since then, you can find them there.
