Featured Reddit content, more videos, homepage latest feed, collection building, improved community section and more

I've kept busy improving the site over the last week, so I wanted to call out some of them and mention a few things I'll be adding next.

Please leave a comment below if you like any of these, or if you have any suggestions for improvement. I love hearing from the users!

Reddit Content Returns

I had previously made a Reddit integration for the site, but Reddit didn't like the server it was running from (blocking it because it matched a pattern bad scripters use). I thought of a new way to import the latest and hottest Reddit threads from 6 different subreddits. It will take me manually running a refresher job from time-to-time, but it's just the click of a button away.

To browse the content, just visit the refreshed Community lander and browse the featured content there.

Many More Videos

Expanded the video system to let me monitor channels and playlists and built a system to let me import channels, playlist, and individual videos with ease. I then improved the Videos section by adding more categories with a navigation to browse them while still also giving filter by channel and sorting options. You can also click on them and watch them without leaving the site for those that want to binge on several.

Homepage Activity Feed

I wanted to provide a way to view all the latest activity all multiple sites (YouTube and Reddit) and media types (mods, photos, reviews, collections, etc) in one place on the homepage. My goal is to give users a place to see all things Starfield. I'm not there yet, of course. Nexus mods will be a big gap until I figure out a good way to integrate with them.

Big Improvements for Collections

Added lots of new features for Collections:

  1. You can now allow others to contribute to your public collection(s), and you can optionally require additions from others receive your approval before being included.
  2. On the rendering side, I am now providing two formats to view a collection: Article and Table. The Article format pulls in more content and features the mod image better with a table of contents at the top. For some, it will make it easier to browse, but it will definitely help with search engines being able to offer the list up to others looking for collections of mods to use in Starfield. The Table format is still available for others to browse the full collection a bit faster.

Improved Community Section

Lots of updates to the Community section to include Reddit content, provide better section navigation with content counts, and lots of other small fixes and visual improvements.

News Import System

I built a news import system to gather Starfield-related news from a couple of different news aggregators, but there's nothing to show publicly for that. Part of that requires Bethesda to make some announcements worthy of generating positive news. We still just mostly have former devs coming out wanting to bash their former employer. Since I don't think that adds any value to fans of the game (you can find those elsewhere easy enough if you're interested), I won't be adding those to the site.

Things Up Next

  1. Improved image uploading (with multiple file uploading for users that already have a single approved image)
  2. Adding support for user avatars: upload an image and provide a tool to crop it into a square for better use on the site.
  3. Providing more help guides around mod usage and building load orders
  4. Still need to provide engagement points for all activities on the site
  5. Adding support for comments on other site content like collections, load orders, photos, and replying to reviews.
  6. Letting users submit articles/blog posts about Starfield. I want the site to be another place to share awesome Starfield content. I've seen amazing things posted on Reddit and Facebook. Once those things fall out of the latest feeds, they become very hard to discover again. I want this site to provide a way for fans to see and enjoy those things again.
