Atmospheric Audio
By Drasilio
Community Rating
Atmospheric Audio adds dynamic environmental audio immersion. Sounds are muffled when you're in vacuum, on atmosphereless planets, in open space, or in caves > and fully restored in pressurized environments. Suit up and you'll hear your own breathing, reacting to exertion and oxygen levels. All effects are configurable: intensity, helmet muffling, breathing, cave behavior, and more.

1.07v[1.07] > Breathing Options & Bug Fixes
New options
- Ship Muffle Intensity > separate intensity setting for 3rd person ship view, independent from the on-foot setting. Note: values are still a work in progress and will be refined in future updates
- Breathing at rest > control the volume of idle breathing (Off / Quieter / Standard)
-Breathing while sprinting > control the volume of exertion breathing independently (Off / Quieter / Standard)
- Canister ambient sound > toggle the continuous oxygen canister loop on or off
- More Realistic Atmospheres > optionally detect non-breathable atmospheres (N2, CO2, H2, thin/toxic) in addition to pure vacuum, triggering breathing and a light/medium effect accordingly
Bug fixes
- Fixed atmosphere muffle not applying during landing/takeoff cinematics on atmosphereless planets
Atmosphere state now updates immediately when a cinematic ends, instead of waiting for the next evaluation tick
Audio
- Reduced ship boost/afterburner start sound in 3rd person. Note: due to the way this sound is set up in the engine, the reduction also affects 1st person view > a proper per-perspective fix will come in a future update
Misc
- Removed XP bonus
- Updated "Helmet Muffled" option description to clarify it has no effect when "Helmet Always" is enabled
- General script cleanup -

1.05v1.05 Out
Bug Fixes
Space location detection > space locations (asteroid outposts, orbital stations, etc.) should be detected as vacuum. Not tested in all scenarios or with all mods adding new space locations, feedback welcome.
Pressurized space stations (The Eye, etc.) > Additional safeguard against false no-atmosphere detection.
Outpost machinery sounds > Extractor and outpost equipment sounds now correctly muffled in no-atmosphere.
Suppressed weapons > Suppressed weapon sounds now correctly muffled in no-atmosphere.
Breathing stops on cell load > Fixed a regression where breathing sounds would stop after entering a new cell.
Helmet cosmetic hide > Muffle and breathing now correctly respect the helmet visibility options.
New Options
Visor Muffling (Breathable Areas) > Reduced muffle when wearing a helmet in breathable environments.
Helmet Breathing (Breathable Areas) > Breathing sounds when wearing a helmet in breathable environments, independent from the main breathing toggle.
Intensity levels > Adjusted from 25/50/100% to 50/75/100%. still pretty rough ^^
Just wanted to say thank you > the support and feedback on this mod has been overwhelming. Every bug report, suggestion, and kind word means a lot. Really appreciate every one of you. ❤️ -
1.04.1v1.04.1 is here
Hey everyone, sorry for the wait on this one > this update turned out to be more involved than expected under the hood.
What's new:
Xbox / Bethesda Creations compatibility > The mod is now fully packaged as ESM + BA2, no loose files needed. A conflict deep in how Starfield loads Wwise audio at startup was preventing the mod from working correctly in BA2 format. That's been resolved by removing a dependency on the Init bank entirely. ->Should work for Ps5 also, not tested.
-Helmet cosmetic hide fix > When the helmet muffle option is enabled, the mod now correctly checks whether the helmet is actually visible, not just equipped. If you use the "auto-hide helmet in breathable areas" option, the muffling and breathing sounds will no longer trigger incorrectly. The logic is simple: hidden helmet = no effect.
- Gendered breathing audio > The breathing system now uses separate male/female audio assets, selected automatically when the helmet seals.
-Fixes from bug reports, thanks for those:
-Physics object hit sounds were not unmuffling properly when back in atmosphere
-Popping sounds on various transitions
-Landing sounds were not muffled correctly in no-atmosphere environments
-Also, rev8 should be properly muffled now
Existing saves: no action needed, everything re-evaluates within a few seconds of loading.
Thx to my roommate Ju for the female voice !!
Again, apologies for the delay. thanks for your patience -

1.03.1Patch Notes — v1.03.1
Fixes
Helmet detection is now more reliable — uses biped slot 36 instead of keyword lookup, fixing false positives with certain armor pieces
Critical Hit sound is now properly muffled in vacuum
New
Breathing sounds now also activate when the Helmet option is ON and a helmet is worn, regardless of the zone -
1.03New breathing sound design added when on the surface > can be toggled off in the menu
Footstep audio has been remixed for a smoother feel across specific surface types
Fixed: weapon audio popping should no longer occur > please report in the comments if you still experience it
Space audio effects have been introduced but still require significant work. Due to Bethesda's audio project limitations, this will take more time and effort than expected > feedback is appreciated. Can be toggled off in the menu if too intense
In-game menu options:
Enabled : toggle the entire mod on/off
Space : 3rd person ship audio treatment
Helmet : audio muffling when wearing a helmet
Caves : effect applies inside caves/underground on atmosphereless planets ⚠️ not yet tested, should work — feedback welcome
Breathing : new surface breathing sounds
Intensity : 25% / 50% / 100% ⚠️ 25% and 50% are not yet fully calibrated, not recommended
A small heads up > the next update will focus on compatibility with Free Lanes. After that, updates may become less frequent as I'm currently developing two games simultaneously. Thank you for your patience!
