Cassilia's Personal Log — Old Earth Vault-Tec Undersuit

I have lost count of how many times I have passed through the Unity.

Every time I step into that light, I tell myself that I am used to the unknown by now. Apparently, I am not.

That time, I woke up on Earth again—but it was not our Earth. There was no New Atlantis, no Constellation, no United Colonies, and not even a single ship capable of truly carrying humanity beyond the Solar System. The entire world looked as though it had been torn apart by a war that happened centuries ago. Ruined cities, radiation, mutated creatures, and some very strange robots were everywhere.

The people there called that place the Commonwealth.

While I was there, I met a man from more than two hundred years in the past. He was searching for his missing son, and it seemed like he was willing to fight the entire world if that was what it took to find him.

I suppose some things never change, no matter which universe you end up in. People will always do unreasonable things for someone they care about.

So I decided to help him.

We crossed ruined cities, abandoned facilities, underground bunkers, and several places I would rather not describe in detail. Eventually, we found his son.

What happened after that was far more complicated than I expected, but that is his story, not mine.

My problem was much simpler.

I had no way home.

There were no Starborn in that universe, no Artifacts, and no one had ever heard of the Unity. Fortunately, my new friend knew of a group with technology far beyond anything else in that world.

They called themselves the Institute.

Their technology was very different from what I was used to. Strange, unfamiliar, and occasionally a little terrifying. Still, I have to give them credit: somehow, they found a way to reconnect my soul with the universe I came from.

And eventually, I returned to the stars.

Before I left, my friend gave me something as a farewell gift.

It was a blue and yellow undersuit made by an old Earth company called Vault-Tec. Apparently, people once wore suits like this inside enormous underground shelters called Vaults.

The first time I saw it, I almost asked him:

“People really wore this while surviving the end of the world?”

He just laughed.

So I kept it.

After returning to my own universe, I made a few modifications. I replaced some of the aging materials, adjusted the fit, reinforced a few sections, and added some modern components that I was more familiar with.

I could have completely rebuilt it into a modern Settled Systems outfit, but I decided not to. I wanted it to still look like what it really is: something from another world, from a journey that was never supposed to belong to me, and a farewell gift from someone I will probably never meet again.

When I first wore it back to the Lodge, everyone spent far too much time trying to figure out what it was.

Sarah thought it looked like an unusually well-preserved piece of Old Earth workwear. Barrett was convinced that the blue-and-yellow color scheme had to belong to some forgotten corporate brand.

Neither of them knew about Vault-Tec, the Vaults, the Commonwealth, or the world this suit came from.

I decided not to explain.

Honestly, trying to describe a version of Earth destroyed by nuclear war, underground shelters full of strange experiments, and a company called Vault-Tec would probably take the entire evening.

So as far as everyone at the Lodge is concerned, this is just another strange Old Earth artifact I somehow brought back from one of my journeys.

But you know the truth now.

I made a version for you as well. Find it in the Lodge.

I hope you like it.

And if anyone at the Lodge asks where it came from...

Just tell them it is one of Cassilia's old souvenirs.

That should be enough.
