Useful Brigs

PSA for existing users: DO NOT UPDATE THIS CREATION IF YOU USE MODDED HABS. Useful Brigs v6 changes the requirements for modded habs to be compatible/supported.
Please be patient while other authors make the necessary changes to become Useful Brigs v6 compatible.
Useful Brigs helps you resolve conflicts non-lethally and makes your ship's brigs... useful!
How It Works
How to send an NPC to the brig
Useful Brigs provides new interaction options which will appear on NPCs at certain times, depending on if you use Useful Brigs by itself, or in combination with Non-Lethal Framework. Both Non-Lethal Framework and Useful Brigs contain their own Release interaction options; one for releasing a prisoner who has been restrained (Non-Lethal Framework) and the other for releasing prisoners who are in a cell in your brig (Useful Brigs). See below for a full breakdown.
Useful Brigs only:
- When an NPC is knocked out or pacified using Diplomacy or Manipulation (for Send to Brig)
- When an NPC is considered a brig prisoner (for Release)
Non-Lethal Framework only:
- When an NPC is knocked out or pacified using Diplomacy or Manipulation (for Restrain)
- When an NPC is considered restrained (for Release)
Useful Brigs + Non-Lethal Framework:
- When an NPC is knocked out or pacified using Diplomacy or Manipulation (for Restrain)
- When an NPC is considered restrained (for Release and Send To Brig)
- When an NPC is considered a brig prisoner (for Release)
When you choose the Send To Brig interaction option and you have enough brig space, the prisoner is assigned a bed. 1 prisoner per 1 bed (a bunkbed is 2 beds as there are 2 cots/mattresses), because we aren't monsters. If you do not have any free beds, you will get a notification informing you of this. Prisoner gear is moved to the player's cargo (additional filters available in Game Option), so you aren't missing out on loot. Some items will not go to cargo, but immediately be moved to your character, such as keys, credits, and quest items.
Now that you have prisoners, you can exchange them for credits with the appropriate faction, whether you decide to be a law bringer or a slaver. Each faction has their own prisoner criteria and bonus payouts depending on the characteristics of your prisoners. If you have prisoners who are classified as criminals, you can turn them into UC Security, UC SysDef, or Freestar Security. The Crimson Fleet and Red Mile will take any prisoner, regardless of classification.
For example, the Crimson Fleet will pay more for women and children, but generally pay less per prisoner. However, the Crimson Fleet will take any prisoner. The UC will pay more per prisoner with a bonus for legendary enemies, but they must belong to a "criminal" faction.
How to sell prisoners
Prisoners are categorized into 2 groups: Criminals and Civilians.
You can turn in prisoners by speaking to guards associated with factions who accept prisoners.
- Criminals: UC Security, UC SysDef, or Freestar Security
- Civilians and criminals: Crimson Fleet, Red Mile security, or Va'ruun security
How to release prisoners
- Visit the prisoner in the cell — a Release interaction option will be visible.
- Use the Brigs Control Terminal to release individual or groups of prisoners.
- While in space, use the Brigs Control Terminal to jettison individual or groups of prisoners.
- Give them the sweet release of death yourself.
How to remove freed or dead prisoners
Dead bodies and freed prisoners are removed from your ship at takeoff and landing. Freed prisoners who are alive will return to their original location.
Additional notes
It was difficult to get prisoners to behave for many reasons. If they get rowdy and leave their cell, you can always edit your ship. The brigs are "refreshed" at takeoff, landing, editing of the ship, and changing of the home ship. The more prisoners you have, the less likely you can spam adding a new prisoner — there is a lot of logic in this creation, and functions can become burdened/expensive fast; the fewer prisoners you have the better this creation performs. Although I don't know of a hard cap on how many prisoners you could have.
Top bunks facing the opposite direction will exit through the wall. I don't have a good solution for this at this time, but it looks good when in use, so I'm keeping it for the time being.
As of v4.0, prisoners will now be more... lively. Yeah! Lively. Prisoners will perform random activities within their cell.
Why did my prisoner disappear?
There can be a number of reasons for this. Some NPCs are cleaned up by their respective quest/event.
Compatibility & Extensibility
All ship hab units that include brigs in them within the base game (including their later-added empty variants) are supported. Here is a list:
- HopeTech Armory 2x1
- Taiyo Armory 2x1
- Deimos Brig 2x2
- HopeTech Brig 2x2
- Nova Galactic Brig 2x2
- Stroud Brig 2x2
- Taiyo Brig 2x2
In vanilla Starfield, 2x2 habs are only available from special ship services vendors, such as Deimos Staryard for the Deimos Brig 2x2 or the HopeTown ship services technician for the HopeTech Brig 2x2.
Any brigs added by creations will need to make specific changes in order to be supported/recognized by Useful Brigs.
Useful Brigs was designed to be used with Non-Lethal Framework. No patch required.
Thanks
Special thanks to MsDarkness1313 for thorough testing of Useful Brigs v6.0!

-
6.0.4* New feature: Shattered Space support - Va'ruun now accepts turn ins with their own bonus criteria.
* New feature: Terran Armada support - Terrans are classified as criminals and are worth more than your average spacer.
* New features: Improved Brigs Control Terminal - You can now do everything you could previously and see/manage an individual prisoner list. New functions include securing/releasing/jettison individuals or as a group (criminals, civilians, all). You may also trade prisoners to equip them with whatever you see fit. Trade supports NPC previews.
* New feature: More terminal choices in build menu.
* New feature: More game options! Turn off Send To Brig interaction option, trade options, more loot filters (junk/misc/resources).
* New feature: When naked, use the chem lab crafting bench to make the ".debug menu" aid item. Once consumed, you can use the menu to release all prisoners and restart the Useful Brigs Manager quest when troubleshooting.
* Bug fix: Loss of leveled characters identities resolved. This was caused by calling Resurrect in an unloaded cell.
* Bug fix: Prisoners appearing around the ship instead of their cell resolved. This was a race condition causing furniture which was disabled and then re-enabled (to clear furniture in use state) where the enable was not happening sequentially and being missed. AI packages also improved.
* Bug fix: Sending too many prisoners to the brig consecutively could result in a mismatch for the actual value of prisoners in the brig.
* Bug fix: Added delay to arrest function prior to resurrect to ensure the OnDeath event fires for outside scripts.
* Payments for prisoner turn ins got a slight bump in their base values.
* Useful Brigs v6 introduces patchless support. This will break existing patches. Please be patient while modded hab authors implement the necessary changes to maintain compatibility with Useful Brigs. -
5.1* New feature: Send To Brig is now async. This change should improve performance when needing to send multiple prisoners to the brig in a short time span.
* Bug fix: Fixed ammo not respecting its own loot filter setting which was incorrectly following the weapon loot toggle.
* Bug fix: Fixed several script errors that could occur with None references during prisoner management.
* General performance improvements. -
5.0.1* Bug fix: Corrected Sent to Brig logic to avoid sending creatures or seeing the options on dead bodies. This bug was introduced in v5.0 when the logic was changed for patchless integration with Non-Lethal Framework. The issue was not visible when Non-Lethal Framework was in use, so not all users were affected.
* Changed Brigs Control Terminal display behavior to what should be more optimized method. -
5.0* The ESM has been changed from FULL master to a SMALL master. Please sell all prisoners, uninstall Useful Brigs, make a new save with Useful Brigs uninstalled, then install the new version.
* Bug fix: Adjusted positioning of prisoner idles to prevent clipping.
* Bug fix: Added some additional logic to prevent papyrus log errors.
* Bug fix: Adjusted "Send to Brig" logic to prevent sending companions in certain situations. -

-
4.2* New feature: Now supports patchless integration with Non-Lethal Framework. Please ensure you are using the latest version of both in order for this feature to work.
* Bug fix: Not really a bug of Useful Brigs, but now includes an a character when replying during a bounty payout which may help prevent issues with dialogue, including issue with the silent voice mod for PC users. -
4.1.3* Bug Fix: Added necessary UI textures to correct the missing image in the build UI for the Brigs Control Terminal.
* Updated text for the Brigs Control Terminal constructable object. -
4.1.2* Minor change to the newly added Game Options to make them similar to the way Bethesda displays Enable/Disable options.
-
4.1.1* Bug Fix: Forgot to add filter for Ammo... now there is one.
* Bug Fix: Found unfilled property for the books filter. Book filtering should now work. -
4.1* New Feature: New Gameplay Option "Send Prisoner to Brig while in Combat" added. The optional file "Useful Brigs - Send To Brig No Combat Check" is no longer required and can be removed from your game.
* New Feature: New Gameplay Option "Filter Loot When Sending Prisoner to Brig" added. Additional Gameplay Options are now present to give some control over what loot is transferred to your ship's cargo to avoid maxing out ship cargo.
* Because Gameplay Options were added, SFBGS007.esm has been added to the list of required master files for Useful Brigs. -
4.0* New Feature: Lively brigs - Prisoners will now engage in different activities within their cell instead of being in their beds 24/7.
* New Feature: Prisoners may now be turned into Red Mile general security, Mei, and Stocker. Known issue: The payout amount will NOT be listed in Red Mile dialogue if using previous versions. It will resolve by either NG+ ...or removing mod/load and save game/re-add mod.
* New Feature: Empty hab support. Known issue: Some empty habs lack computers to open the prison doors, have objects that shouldn't be there (as in, its not empty), or are missing that should be there (like a terminal arm so the terminal isnt floating). This is a vanilla issue and outside the scope of this mod.
* New Feature: A standing variant of the Brigs Management Terminal has been added as a constructable object since one is not added to empty brigs.
* Bug Fix: Useful Brigs "Brigs Management Terminal" animations and menu have been fixed.
* Bug Fix: You can no longer send mannequins to the brig. -
3.3Added support for use of the Manipulation and Diplomacy social skill perks as an additional/alternative option to knocking out NPCs in order to send them to the brig.
-
1.00Resolved inconsistent behavior regarding the script execution for turning in prisoners.
-
1.00Changed Send To Brig functionality to add a global variable to check for whether or not being out of combat is required to send prisoners to the brig. An optional file has been added to remove the requirement that the player must be out of combat when sending NPCs to the brig.
-
1.00Sergeant Yumi isn't actually associated with UC Security... lol. He's just in the generic "GuardFaction". I've removed GuardFaction as a turn in as not all guards in my head cannon will just take your random prisoners nor was there ever dialogue for it in previous versions.
Trackers Alliance Free DLC (SFBGS003.esm) was added as a master. Bounty targets are now considered criminals by Useful Brigs. Please note that currently bounties are temporary actors and while they can be sent to brig they are disabled/cleaned up (removed) by their owning quest. I may do a deeper integration at a later date via a patch for those who want it despite potential for compatibility issues.
