Sensible Chems

This mod corrects a few things that never made sense to me about Starfield's chem market:

  • Aurora is the only outlawed chem, despite the fact that many other chems offer far more substantial performance enhancements.
  • Several powerful chems carry no risk of addiction whatsoever, despite having effects comparable to potentially addictive real-world pharmaceuticals.
  • Chems are barely worth anything on resale, making a chem trafficking playthrough hardly worth the trouble.

Sensible Chems addresses all three in one package.

Contraband

The following chems are now considered contraband, with Aurora retaining its existing illegal status:

  • Addijack
  • Aurora
  • BattleUp
  • Black Hole Heart
  • Dwarf Star Heart
  • Frostwolf
  • Giant Heart
  • Hypergiant Heart
  • Neurajack
  • O2 Shot
  • Panopticon
  • Paramour
  • RedAmp
  • RedTrench
  • S.T.E.V.E.
  • Squall
  • Subgiant Heart
  • Supermassive Black Heart
  • Whiteout

To make the illicit chem trade worth your time, all 19 listed chems are now worth five (5) times their vanilla value.

Addiction

Several chems (and one particular beverage containing a "secret" ingredient) also now carry a chance of addiction, based loosely on the addictive potential of comparable real-world pharmaceuticals.

The following are the addiction probabilities, with unchanged vanilla values noted:

  • AddiJack - 3%
  • Aurora - 25% (vanilla)
  • BattleUp - 10%
  • Blend - 5%
  • Frostwolf - 35% (vanilla)
  • Neurajack - 3%
  • Panopticon - 5%
  • RedAmp - 15%
  • RedTrench - 10%
  • S.T.E.V.E. - 25% (vanilla)
  • Squall - 35% (vanilla)
  • Whiteout - 35% (vanilla)

All other listed chems retain their non-addictive status, including the six exotic, Caelumite-based Heart chems.

The intent isn't to make every chem addictive but to create a more believable distinction between regulated pharmaceuticals, illicit performance enhancers, and experimental substances.

I hope you enjoy the drug trade in the Settled Systems making a little more sense!

Compatibility Notes

  • Mods are best installed or removed in a fresh game or just before a Unity jump.
  • Installing mid-playthrough may not immediately affect existing spawned instances of these chems. Sleeping on Venus to refresh vendor inventories may help with newly stocked items.
  • Mods that alter the price, addiction chance, or contraband status of these chems may conflict.
